What is a Urogynecologist and When Would I Need One?
Although your primary care physician, OB/GYN, or urologist may have knowledge about pelvic floor problems, a urogynecologist has specialized training and can provide surgical and non-surgical care for women with pelvic floor disorders with additional expertise.
Urogynecologists undergo training as either obstetrician gynecologists or urologists and then specialize with further training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. We treat a range of pelvic floor disorders including:
-
Pelvic organ prolapse (dropped bladder, vagina, uterus, rectum, vaginal bulge)
-
Urinary incontinence, overactive bladder (urine leakage with coughing/sneezing/activities, leakage with urgency, urinary frequency)
-
Urethral diverticulum, urethral caruncle/prolapse
-
Fistula (abnormal connection between the vagina and bladder or rectum)
-
Painful bladder syndrome or Interstitial Cystitis (bladder pain without UTIs)
-
Fecal incontinence
-
Dyspareunia, pelvic floor muscle spasms (pain with intercourse, pelvic floor muscle pain)
However, there are some pelvic conditions that are better treated by other specialties:
-
Recurrent urinary tract infections/UTIs (urology)
-
Rectal prolapse (colorectal surgery)
-
Hematuria/blood in the urine (urology)
-
Kidney stones (urology)
-
Abnormal uterine bleeding (gynecology)
-
Abnormal bladder findings/tumor/mass (urology)
-
Pelvic pain/endometriosis (gynecology)
-
Pap smears (gynecology)
At Penn Medicine Princeton Urogynecology, we work with a multidisciplinary team to improve our patients’ quality of life. Our urogynecologists provide office evaluations, pessary care, cystoscopy, bladder Botox injections, urethral bulking injections, peripheral nerve stimulation, sacral neuromodulation, vaginal prolapse surgery, robotic prolapse surgery, and other pelvic surgeries. Our physician assistants/PAs provide office evaluations, pessary care, urodynamic testing (bladder function tests) and help manage our patients before and after surgery along with our physicians. "Princeton Urogynecology is an efficiently coordinated and excellently staffed operation. The receptionists, nurses and P.A.s are caring and helpful. Dr. Heather van Raalte is one of the best physicians I have encountered in the field of women's health care. She is thorough and listens to her patient's concerns. Dr. van Raalte does an excellent examination and spends time afterwards explaining your options for treatment. On a personal level, she is both kind and understanding. She is a Doctor who treats her patients with expertise and concern."
